Lower Risk

Lambs in the group are younger than 6 -12 weeks old

Lambs younger than 6-12 weeks of age are not usually eating sufficient grass to ingest enough Nematodirus eggs to cause disease. If lambs are still younger than this during the hatching period, the hatched larvae will tend to be ‘hoovered up’ by ewes instead, and as ewes are generally immune, problems will not occur. Bear in mind that lambs eat more grass at a younger age if ewes are not producing adequate milk. Lambs over 3 months are less susceptible to disease. Nematodirus eggs all tend to hatch within a short time frame which is predictable based on the temperature. Keep an eye on the alerts from NADIS Nematodirus forecast to see whether action is needed
